Val is an Appalachian-born adventurer who cut his teeth in the outdoor industry as a young man working in the local forests of Western North Carolina.
In 2021 Val covered all 800-miles of the Arizona Trail, battling sun-poisoning and long water carries amidst the state’s driest year on record. Since his time in the desert he has set his sites on ultrarunning and other, faster adventures through the wilderness.
Val has completed the Crazy Mountain 100-mile race, one of the US’ hardest events, twice and has competed in a deep-Winter race through the Yukon just outside the Canadian Arctic. His tenacity in extreme environments and commitment to finding growth and resiliency in the field has granted Val opportunities to guide on the Glaciers of Norway, the ancient mountains of the American Southeast, and the Northern Rocky Mountains.
Following a three-year objective to ski solo and unsupported to the South Pole, which unfortunately ended in evacuation from the field, Val has presented on his expedition in schools throughout Appalachia.
